Fix: Skype Video Call Crashes – Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered

Why Skype Video Call Crashes?

If you face the “Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered. Display Driver AMD (or NVIDIA) driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered ” problem when you try to make a Skype video call or when you try to access the Skype video (webcam) settings, then your display driver crashes because you have a compatibility issue between the currently installed display drivers and the Skype application.

Symptoms: While using Skype or another program your video card driver crashes with error message “Display Driver stopped responding”, your PC temporarily freezes, the Skype application crashes (and then close) and you may also receive a blue screen (BSOD) error message caused by the “Atikmdag.sys” file (if you own an AMD/ATI display card)” or by the “nvlddmkm.sys” file (if you own an NVIDIA display card).

To resolve “Display Driver stopped responding and has recovered”  error message and the above described symptoms, while using Skype (or other program or game) follow the steps below.

How to fix ‘Display Driver Stopped Responding’ problem while using Skype or other program.

To resolve the video crash problem on Skype:

1. Navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the currently installed display drivers from your computer.

2. When the uninstall operation is completed restart your computer.

3. After restart navigate to your computer manufacturer’s support site to download and install an oldest driver version for your graphics card. If you own a desktop or laptop* computer with an AMD/ATI or an NVIDIA VGA card, then follow the steps below to find, download and install a previous driver version for your display card. To do that:

*Note: In some laptops the only way to find the driver is from manufacturer’s site.

For NVIDIA based GPU’s.

1. Go to NVIDIA advanced driver search page and search for the corresponding driver for your display adapter.
2. In the search results page download a previous driver version.
3. Install the driver you downloaded and restart your computer.

For AMD based GPU’s.

1. Go to AMD (ATI) Driver Download and search for the corresponding driver for your display adapter.
2. In the search results page, press the Previous Drivers and Software link at the right.
3. Install the driver you downloaded and restart your computer.
