If you try to create a System Image on Windows 10/11 but you receive the error 0x80780119 “The backup failed. There is not enough space to create the volume shadow copy on the storage location”, in this guide you’ll find two (2) methods to fix the problem.

The error “There is not enough space to create the volume shadow copy” occurs because one of the volumes does not have enough free space for the backup. More specifically, for volumes less than 500MB you’ll need at least 50MB of free space and for volumes over 500MB the minimum is 320MB of free space.

How to Fix Error 0x80780119: System Image Backup Failed on Windows 10/11 Backup & Restore tool.

Method 1. Disable the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).

The first method to fix the mentioned problem, is to disable the Windows RE from command prompt and then to run the System Image backup. To do that:

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator and give the following command:

  • reagentc /disable

Disable Windows REDisable Windows RE

2. When the operation is completed, close the command prompt window and try to Create the System Image. If the System Image backup fails again with the same error, give the below command to re-enable the Windows RE and then continue to next method:

  • reagentc /enable

Method 2. Increase the Size of the System and/or Recovery Partition.

The second method to fix the mentioned problem is to increase the space on each volume that does not have the required free space for backup.

Step 1. Backup your data to an external USB drive.
Important:
As a precaution, back up your data to an external storage device before changing the partition size.

Step 2. Increase Partition Size.

1. Download MiniTool Partition Wizard Free.

2. When the download is completed open the downloaded file and install the Free edition of the program.

3. When the installation is complete, open MiniTool Partition Wizard.

4. At right, see which partition doesn’t have one of the following (or both) requirements:

  • Total Capacity: at least 100MB
  • Unused Space (Free Space): 50MB if the total capacity is below 500MB and 320MB if capacity is over 500MB.

Example 1. At this example the “System Reserved” partition, has capacity below 100MB, so it does not meet the “Capacity” requirement.
