The Outlook “0x80004005” error can occur in any version of Outlook (2003, 2007, 2010 or 2013) and usually means that the Outlook PST data file or the Outlook Profile has been corrupted or damaged because of a power corruption, disk damage, or other unknown reasons.
How to Resolve the Receiving Error 0x80004005 in Outlook 2003, 2007, 2010 or 2013.
Method 1. Temporarily Disable the Antivirus Protection.
If you ‘re using an antivirus program with email scanning features, try to temporarily disable it and check Outlook again.
Method 2. Turn Off the New Mail Notification in Outlook.
In some cases you may experience the error 0x80004005 in Outlook receiving process, if the new mail notifications are enabled. To disable the New Mail alerts in Outlook 2010, 2013 or 2016: *
1. From the File menu, click Options.
2. Select Mail at the left pane, and then unselect all the checkboxes at ‘Messages Arrival’ section (at the right pane).
3. Click OK and restart Outlook. *
* Note: To turn off the new email notification alert in Outlook 2007:
1.Click Tools -> Options.
2. Click E-mail Setup and then click Advanced E-mail Options.
3. Clear all the checkboxes at ‘When new items arrive in my inbox’ options.
4. When done, click OK twice to close the Email options.
5. Close and re-launch Outlook.
4. If Outlook still displays the 0x80004005 error during Send/Receive, then undo the changes you made and continue to the next method.
Method 3. Repair the Outlook .PST Data file.
Step 1. Locate the OUTLOOK PST DATA File on the disk.
1. Close Outlook.
2. Navigate to Control Panel and open Mail. (If you don’t view the Mail item, change the View By: to Small Icons)
3. Click Data Files button.
4. Note the location (path) where the Outlook Data File (e.g. Outlook.pst) is stored on your computer and then close Mail Options.
Step 2. Repair the Outlook PST DATA File with SCANPST
1. To repair the Outlook PST data files, double click at “SCANPST.EXE“, from the following location on your disk: *
- C:Program FilesMicrosoft Office%OfficeVersion%SCANPST.EXE
* Note: The location of “scanpst.exe”, is different for every version of Outlook & Windows you have installed. Bellow are mentioned the locations of the “SCANPST.EXE” file, according the installed Windows and Office version.

2. Click Browse and navigate to the location where the Outlook Data File is stored.
3. Select the Outlook Data File that you want to repair. (e.g. Outlook.pst) and click OK.
4. Finally press Start to start repair.
5. Wait until the Outlook PST Repair is completed and then close the Inbox Repair Tool utility.
6. Open Outlook click the “Send & Receive” button, to check if the error 0x80004005 has solved. If the problem persists continue to the next method.
Method 4. Delete and re-Create the Outlook Profile.
1. Close Outlook.
2. Navigate to Control Panel and open Mail. (If you don’t view the Mail item, change the View By: to Small Icons)
3. Click Show Profiles. *
* Important Note: If you use more than one email account, then check if the error appears in all email accounts. If the error appears only in one account, then try to delete and re-add only the account with the problem, by using the following procedure:
a. Click the E-mail Accounts button and remove the email account with the problem.
b. Then click Data Files, and remove the Outlook data file, associated for the removed account.
c. Finally click E-Mail Accounts again, and re-add the removed email account.
4. Select the current profile and click Remove. Then click Yes to confirm your decision.
5. Then click the Add button and give a name for the profile: (e.g. “Outlook”).
6. Follow the steps in the “Add Account” wizard and reconfigure your mail account.
7. After adding you account, open Outlook and check if the “Receiving reported error (0x80004005): The operation failed”, has resolved. *
* Note: If Outlook works well and receives emails without problems, proceed and restore your emails from the old Outlook .PST data file, by following the instructions below:
- From Outlook‘s File menu, select Open & Export > Import/Export.
- At ‘Choose an action to perform’ options, select Import from Another Program or File & click Next.
- At ‘Select file type to import from” options, select Outlook Data File (.pst) & click Next.
- At ‘File to import screen’, click Browse.
- Select the old Outlook PST file that you want to import your emails from & click Open.
- Click Next & Finish.
