In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to check the device encryption status on Windows 11/10 devices.
Device encryption or BitLocker Encryption feature in Windows 10/11 devices helps to protect your data for unauthorized access, by encrypting them. After encrypting the data on a device, the user must enter a passphrase or use a smart card to be able to unlock and access them, otherwise the access to the data is impossible even if the disk is removed and placed on another computer.
However, sometimes there are issues with device encryption, such as compatibility issues or problems installing Windows updates, and it is required to be disabled. (Read this article to find other reasons why you might need to disable device encryption.)
How to View Device Encryption status on Windows 11/10.
1. Check Device Encryption on Windows 11 Home.
1. On the search, type “device encryption settings” and then Open them. *
* Note: If you couldn’t find the ‘device encryption settings’ then your system doesn’t support encryption.
2. If the Device encryption switch is OFF then your device’s data isn’t encrypted. To protect your data with Device Encryption set the switch to On.
3. If the Device encryption switch is ON, then your data is encrypted and protected. To disable the device encryption:
a. Set the Device Encryption switch to OFF.
b. Then click Turn off when asked to remove the device encryption, and wait until your data is decrypted.
2. Check Device Encryption status on Windows 11/10 Pro.
If you own Windows 10/11 Professional, do the following to find out the device/BitLocker encryption status on your device.
1. On the search, type “manage bitlocker” and then click Open.
2. At ‘BitLocker Drive Encryption’ screen, if BitLocker is Off, that means that your data are not encrypted. To encrypt them, click Turn on BitLocker and then follow the instructions in this tutorial.
3. If BitLocker is On then, then your data is encrypted. To remove the encryption from your data, click Turn off BitLocker* and then wait for BitLocker to decrypt and unlock your files.
* Note: If the “Turn Off BitLocker” option is unavailable, follow the instructions on this article: How to Disable BitLocker in Windows 10.
