What is the “AutoRun” feature?
The AutoRun functionality on Windows Operating systems translates a hardware action to a software command or commands. For example, when you insert a removable disk (or an optical disk) to your computer, Windows scans its contents to look for a file named “Autorun.inf”. Inside “Autorun.inf” Windows find the appropriate instructions for this device (e.g. Open Play, Start Installation, Run a program, etc.) After that, Windows executes the command(s) from “Autorun.inf” file. In fact the AutoRun feature enables devices or media to launch programs by using the commands stored in the “Autorun.inf” file.
Why should you disable Autorun?
Although “Autorun” is a useful feature, cybercriminals have taken advantage of this, and spread malicious code through it. For this reason it’s better to disable the “Autorun” feature on your computer in order to prevent worms from spreading.

1. Download and run the Microsoft Fixit – Disable Autorun utility.
2. After installation restart your computer for changes take effect.
