FIX: Windows 10 1803 Update issue on Hybrid laptops with discrete GPU.

Problem in details: When you try to update Windows 10 at the latest build 1803, on a laptop with a discrete GPU (e.g. on a ‘Dell XPS’  or  a ‘DellAlienware” laptop ), you receive an error message that says that “Some apps need to be uninstalled” because they aren’t compatible with the upgrade. But, when you select the uninstall option, you receive another error message that says, that the uninstall fails and you have to manually uninstall these apps: Hybrid laptops with discrete GPU connected to display.

Method 1. Install the Windows 10 1803 Update Manually.

1. Navigate to Windows 10 download site and click the Update now button.
2. Save the “Windows10Upgrade9252.exe” file on your desktop.
3. Double click at the download file to open the Windows Upgrade Assistant.

4. Click Update Now & then click Next.

5. Let Windows to finish the downloading and the verification.
6. When the verification is reaches 100%, disconnect your computer from the Internet, or set it to “Airplane mode“.
7. Wait until Windows updating your system.
8. When prompted, restart your system to install the update.

Method 2. Disable Display Adapters from Device Manager.

The second method to resolve the Windows 10 1803 Update issue on hybrid laptops discrete GPU, is to disable the graphic cards before updating to Windows 10 v1803. To do that:

 

1.  Press Windows image_thumb8_thumb + R keys to open the run command box.
2. Type: devmgmt.msc & click OK to open ‘Device Manager’.

3. In Device Manager expand the Display Adapters.
4. Right click on all installed graphic adapters and select Disable.

5. Restart the computer.
6. Use the Windows Update Assistant (see Method-1 above) to download and install the Windows 10 1803 Update. *

* Note: If the update installation is successful, then re-open device manager and enable the display adapters. If the installation fails again, continue to next method.

 

Method 3. Uninstall Display Drivers.

1. Press simultaneously the Windows image + R keys to open the run command box.
2. Type: appwiz.cpl and click OK.

3. In Programs and Features, uninstall all the NVIDIA & Intel Software.

4. Then, open Device Manager & expand the Display adapters.
5. Right click on every installed adapter and click Uninstall device.

6. Select to Delete the driver software for this device (if prompted) and click Uninstall.

7. When the uninstall is completed, follow the instructions from method-1 above to update Windows 10 to the the latest build (1803).
8. After Update, proceed and connect your PC to the Internet again and let Windows 10 to reinstall the needed drivers for your graphics adapters.

 

Method 4. Update to Windows 10 v1803 using the Media Creation Tool.

1. Download Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. ( Source: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 )

2. Run the Media Creation Tool and Accept the License Terms at the first screen.
3. Select Create installation media for another PC.

4. At ‘Language, architecture and edition’ screen click Next.
5. Place a dot at ISO file and click Next.

6. Save the ‘Windows.iso’ file to your desktop.
7. The Media Creation Tool will now begin to download the Windows 10 in an ISO format.
8. When the download is completed, close the Media Creation Tool.

9. Disconnect your computer from the Internet, or set it to “Airplane mode”.

10. Then, right click on the “Windows.iso” file (on your desktop) and click Mount.
11. Double click at Setup application.

12. At the below screen choose ‘Not right now’ and click Next.

13. Follow the rest onscreen instructions to update your system.
